Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had another busy week in Year 2! Here is a little look at what we have been learning, along with some important information about our upcoming WILD WEST session.

✏️ Writing

This week, we have been exploring the story On the Way Home by Jill Murphy. The children have taken part in lots of drama and discussion to explore the characters and events in the story.

We have also been creating story maps, using pictures, symbols and key words to help us remember and retell the events in the correct order. The children have really enjoyed bringing the story to life!

🔢 Maths

In Maths, we have been comparing numbers and learning to use the greater than (>) and less than (<) symbols correctly.

We have also been practising counting in 2s. It would be really helpful if you could practise counting forwards and backwards in 2s at home. Little and often makes a big difference!

🎵 Music

The children have been absolutely brilliant in Music this week!

We have been learning about graphic notation, including crotchets, which last for one beat, and quavers, which we have been using in pairs, with each quaver lasting half a beat.

The children explored different fairy tales and imagined the music they might compose to accompany different parts of each story. They chose appropriate instruments and recorded their ideas using graphic notation.

They even thought carefully about the musical elements of tempo, dynamics and pitch – deciding whether their music should be fast or slow, loud or quiet, and high or low.

They did a fantastic job and seemed to really enjoy becoming composers! 🎶

📝 Weekly Spellings

The children will be tested on these spellings on Friday 9th October 2026:

circus • space • fancy • cell • circle • rice • city • lace • ice • race

Please practise these regularly at home ready for Friday's test.

🌿 WILD WEST – Important Information

Year 2 will have WILD WEST sessions on the following dates this academic year.

Please make a note of these dates in your diary:

📅 Wednesday 14th October 2026

📅 Wednesday 16th June 2027

WILD WEST is unique to Westerings and forms part of our Education Outside the Classroom offer.

Our WILD WEST curriculum is designed to provide pupils with enriching experiences beyond the four walls of the classroom, allowing them to discover and develop their unique potential and ultimately find their "Remarkable."

The curriculum is carefully designed to enhance children's personal development and character education. Through WILD WEST, we aim to develop:

🌱 Resilience and problem-solving skills: Children will encounter challenges and opportunities that test their resilience and teach them to adapt and overcome obstacles.

💬 Communication skills: Engaging in a range of activities helps children to express themselves effectively and listen attentively to others.

🤝 Collaboration: Working in teams teaches valuable collaboration skills and emphasises the importance of teamwork and cooperation.

⭐ Confidence: As children step outside their comfort zones, they develop confidence in their abilities and decisions.

🌟 Independence: WILD WEST encourages children to take initiative and make independent choices, developing responsibility and self-reliance.

🎨 Creative talents: The programme provides opportunities for creative expression, allowing children to explore and develop their artistic and innovative capabilities.

👕 What should my child wear?

All WILD WEST lessons are taught outdoors.

On their WILD WEST day, children should come to school wearing old clothes and wellies or old trainers.

Due to the nature of the session, children must also bring their school PE uniform, including trainers, to change into afterwards. This ensures they have warm, dry and clean clothes to wear for the remainder of the school day.

🌧️ Wetter months – December, January, February, March and April

Children should wear/bring:

  • A long-sleeved top

  • Long trousers for warmth and safety

  • A warm fleece, hoodie or jumper, depending on the weather

  • Old trainers or wellies – wellies are particularly recommended during the winter as the WILD WEST area can become very muddy

  • A warm waterproof coat or wet-weather suit

  • A beanie or warm hat

  • Gloves

  • Wellies

☀️ Warmer months – September, October, May, June and July

Children should wear/bring:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing – please be aware that gnat bites can be an issue during the warmer months

  • A sunhat

  • A showerproof coat or puddle suit if required

  • Closed-toe, securely attached shoes such as old trainers

  • Suitable clothing for potentially muddy conditions, particularly following rain

Please apply sun cream and insect repellent before your child comes to school, where appropriate.

⚠️ Please note: if your child does not have appropriate outdoor clothing, they will be unable to participate in the WILD WEST session.

As the saying goes:

"There is no such thing as bad weather, just unsuitable clothing." 🌦️
