Year 1 Weekly updates

Spellings

The children’s first spelling test will take place on Friday 24th March. On this day, they will be given their spelling books to take home so you can review their progress. Please ensure that these books are brought back to school every Friday for their next test.

Please note that spelling books should be used for tests only and not for practice. We kindly ask that any practice is completed on separate paper.

Phonics

Please see Phonics practise materials below:

Please also continue to read at home at least 4 times a week.

This weeks learning!

This week in maths, the children have been learning about British coins, including how to recognise them and use them to make different amounts. They have been practising using repeated addition to work out totals and exploring the idea of equivalence—for example, understanding that 2p is the same as two 1p coins.

We have also been encouraging the children to talk through their thinking, using mathematical language to explain how they know different amounts are equal. You could support this learning at home by letting your child handle real coins, make small amounts, and discuss different ways to create the same value.

In English, we have been learning the story The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse. The children have been thinking carefully about what it might be like to live in each setting and discussing the differences between town and country life.

They have also begun to share their own opinions about where they would prefer to live and explain their reasons. Next week, the children will be using their ideas to write simple setting descriptions for each place, focusing on describing what they might see, hear, and feel.

This week, we have also started our exciting history topic on the Great Fire of London. The children have been learning about the key events and beginning to understand what happened during this important time in history.

We have also learned about significant people from this period and how we know so much about the event through the diary of Samuel Pepys.

In PSHE, we have been learning about how to make healthy choices and understand what helps us to stay healthy and happy.

In RE, we have started to discuss how the world came to be. The children have been exploring different religious beliefs and beginning to share their own thoughts and opinions respectfully. In science, we have started our topic on scientists and inventors. This week, our focus has been on the creator of Lego, Ole Kirk Christiansen. The children have been learning about his ideas and how his inventions have developed over time to become the Lego we know today. Next week - Mae Jemison!

Thank you for your ongoing support!
