We have had another fantastic week in Year 1!
In English, the children have been writing about where they would prefer to live – in the town or the countryside – and explaining their reasons. We were very impressed with their use of adjectives, verbs, conjunctions and punctuation.
In Maths, we have continued learning about money. The children have been exploring British coins and notes, and understanding their values and equivalences (for example, five £1 coins equal a £5 note, and two £10 notes equal £20).
As part of our “Scientists and Inventors” topic in Science, we have been learning about zoos and the influence of George Mottershead over time.
We also enjoyed an exciting visit from Trunk Theatre, who performed a fantastic and engaging show about the events of the Great Fire of London.
Coming up next week:
We will be making our own Tudor houses using cardboard boxes. The children were asked to begin collecting boxes last week—this is a gentle reminder to please send these into school by Thursday 7th May, so we can begin building. They will need at least 2 cardboard boxes (cereal boxes/shoe boxes - not too big as they are going to need to carry them). See examples here:

We are then planning to take our Tudor houses to Belchamps on Tuesday 12th May, where the children will watch a recreation of the Great Fire of London. Firefighters will be present to safely set and extinguish the fire while we observe from a distance.
If you are available to help on this trip from 8:40am to 11:30am, we would greatly appreciate your support. Please contact the school office if you are able to volunteer. Thank you in advance. Spellings reminder:
The children’s second spelling test will take place tomorrow. Please ensure they have practised their spellings and bring their spelling books into school.
