🌸 Year 2 Weekly Update – Violets and Poppies 🌸
We've had another busy week of learning in Year 2! Here's what we've been getting up to.
📚 English
This week, we have been exploring the beautiful story The Rhythm of the Rain, which follows the journey of a raindrop from a cloud, through rivers and beyond!
The children have been practising using expanded noun phrases (describing words that add detail to a noun) and adverbs (words that describe how something happens) to make their writing more interesting and descriptive.
The children have really enjoyed getting creative and applying their learning to their writing. We can't wait for them to plan their very own stories about the journey of a raindrop next week!
🔢 Maths
In Maths, we have been learning how to use bar models and part-part-whole models (sometimes called cherry diagrams) to help us understand addition and subtraction problems.
We have been focusing on identifying the parts and the whole in a word problem.
For example:
Sally has 10 green marbles and 4 yellow marbles. How many marbles does she have altogether?
Part 1:Â 10 green marbles
Part 2:Â 4 yellow marbles
Whole:Â 14 marbles altogether
The children are learning to recognise that the parts combine to make the whole. These visual models are really helpful for understanding how addition and subtraction are connected!
🕯️ Religious Education
In RE, we have been learning about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah and the miracle of the oil, which lasted for eight days when there was only enough for one!
We have explored how the lights of the Hanukkah menorah remind Jewish people of this miracle and God's presence.
The children have made some wonderful connections between the lights of Hanukkah, the diya lamps used by Hindus during Diwali (which takes place this weekend!) and the Christingle used by Christians.
We have been discussing how light is an important symbol across all three religions, representing ideas such as hope, guidance and God's love.
🔬 Science
In Science, we have been learning about MRS GREN, a useful way to remember the seven life processes that living things carry out.
M – Movement
R – Respiration
S – Sensitivity
G – Growth
R – Reproduction
E – Excretion
N – Nutrition
We have been thinking about how these processes help us identify whether something is alive.

🚸 Hometime Collection
Please could we remind all parents and carers of a few important things to help ensure that the end of the school day runs safely and smoothly.
Please wait by your child's classroom door, making sure that you are clearly visible to the teacher when collecting your child.
Please stand back from the doorway. When adults stand very close to the door, it can make it difficult for children to see around them and spot their grown-up.
If you would like to speak to the teacher, please wait until all children have been safely dismissed before approaching them.
This allows teachers to give their full attention to ensuring that every child is handed over safely to the correct adult.
Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation!
Have a lovely weekend!
