Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back! The children have worked super hard during their first week back and have thrown themselves into their learning with so much enthusiasm. Here is a look at what we’ve been up to this week and a glimpse into what’s ahead:

English

We started the week with an exciting hook where the children had to correct mixed-up potions! 🧪 This led us straight into the start of our brand-new Harry Potter unit, where we will be exploring the wonderful world of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. 🪄✨

Science

In Science, we have been investigating sound—exploring how it travels and vibrations.

Computing

We have been learning all about online safety, specifically focusing on how to identify credible sources when searching for information online.

Design & Technology (DT)

In DT, the children have been getting hands-on with mechanisms, looking at how levers, pulleys, and gears work.

Maths

In Maths, we have been learning how to solve larger calculations using mental strategies as well as the formal column method for addition and subtraction. In Year 4 we aim to add and subtract 4 digit numbers.

To support your child with these methods at home, you can use these helpful BBC Bitesize guides:

PSHE this Half Term: Exploring Ways to Manage Risk

In PSHE, our overarching theme this half term is "Exploring ways to manage risk."

It is always important to us to share what we will be covering so you are prepared if your child wants to talk about these topics further at home or has questions. Please be assured that all topics are taught in an age-appropriate way.

The key areas we will cover include:

  1. Keeping safe at home and out and about (including road safety).

  2. Exploring risk in relation to everyday situations and gambling, where learning objectives include:

    • Assessing how risky different everyday activities are.

    • Describing how important it is to ‘stop and think’ before taking a risk.

    • Explaining what makes a risk worth taking and what makes it too risky.

  3. Drug Education, which involves:

    • Safety with medicines and household products.

    • Understanding smoking, vaping, and alcohol—learning that caffeine, cigarettes, vaping (e-cigarettes), and alcohol can affect people’s health.

If you have any questions regarding the resources we use or would like to talk through any of these PSHE topics, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Some reminders:

  • Please ensure that Christmas card forms are brought back into class by 11th November if you wish to purchase anything.

  • Please let the office know if you are able to help on our Wild West day at the end of November. Any support is greatly appreciated!

The spellings that will be tested on Friday 13th November are displayed below:

Thank you for your continued support! Have a wonderful weekend.
