Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 12th October 2026
The children have continued to demonstrate fantastic focus and dedication across all subjects as we head toward the end of our first half term! It has been brilliant to see their hard work and enthusiasm as we build momentum in our learning.
In English, the children have started drafting their English 'hot task' - writing detailed information texts about fascinating creatures of legend, including the Hydra, Minotaur, Griffin, and Phoenix. They have been working hard to elevate their technical writing skills, expertly incorporating parenthesis, colons, and semicolons to organise their facts and add detail to their descriptions.
In Maths, our focus turned to understanding numerical properties as we tackled square numbers, cube numbers, and prime numbers. The children showed brilliant problem-solving skills and perseverance as they identified patterns and developed a deeper understanding of these key mathematical concepts.
Our wider curriculum has been packed with creativity and hands-on discovery:
Art: The children finalised their stunning space-inspired art pieces, taking inspiration from the bold, repeating patterns and vibrant style of artist Yayoi Kusama.
History: We travelled back in time to explore Viking history, examining various historical artefacts to uncover how the Vikings lived, traded, and traveled.
Spellings for Next Week Our spelling focus for next week draws from the Year 5/6 Common Exception Words list. Spelling tests will take place on Friday as usual. Please encourage your child to practise writing out the following words:
appreciate
cemetery
conscious
convenience
environment

sufficient

Looking Ahead & Key Notices
Monday & Wednesday: Parents' Evening. As a reminder, if your child has already had a Learning Plan meeting, this covers your update and you do not need to book a separate Parents' Evening slot. Children will complete their first half-termly arithmetic assessment as well as their first unseen writing task of the year.
Thursday: Science Challenge Day! For the selected children participating, they will be meeting Mrs Doherty at Greensward Academy. Please refer to the letter sent home for specific arrival times and details.
Friday: PE day as usual and our final day of Autumn 1!
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We hope you all have a wonderful and restful weekend!
