Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 21st September 2026

We have had another fantastic week in class, filled with brilliant effort and enthusiasm! In English, we have been sharpening our toolkit by exploring fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases, and relative clauses, all while starting to plan our character descriptions. In Maths, we have been working hard on place value, decimals, negative numbers, and rounding. Our wider curriculum has been just as busy! In Science, we investigated how day and night occur, while in History, we began exploring how Britain changed between the end of Roman rule and the Anglo-Saxon settlement. In PSHE, we had some thoughtful discussions about friendships and the difference between inclusion and exclusion, and in Computing, we refreshed our knowledge on keeping ourselves safe in the digital world.

Spellings for Next Week

Our spelling focus for next week covers words with the suffix ‘-cial’. Spelling tests take place on Fridays. Please encourage your child to practise writing out the following words:

• artificial

• beneficial

• crucial

• especially

• facial

• glacial

• judicial

• multiracial

• official

• special

We have also set an assignment on spelling shed for children to practise independently.

Reminders for Next Week

• Reading at Home: A gentle reminder about the importance of reading with your child at home and logging it on Boom Reader. Our expectation is for children to read at least 4 times a week.

• NGRT Assessments: We will be taking part in our NGRT reading assessments throughout the week.

• Tuesday – Student Council Elections: In the afternoon, children standing for election will present to the class, and together with the teachers, we will decide on our new reps. There are also opportunities for children to apply to either be a Digital Leader or Librarian - information is available on their google classroom.

• Friday – PE: Please ensure children arrive at school dressed in their appropriate PE kit.
