Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 28th September 2026
We are now three weeks into the term, and it has been fantastic to see our Year 5 classes really picking up the pace! The children are settling into their routines brilliantly and showing great focus across all subjects. Following on from our recent elections, the results for our new School Council representatives will be officially revealed in assembly next Friday, good luck to everyone who stood!
In English, the children completed their very first 'Hot Task' this week - a character description based on Beowulf. We were incredibly impressed by the ambitious vocabulary and thoughtful descriptions they produced! In Maths, we have been mastering rounding, working with numbers up to 100,000, including decimals.
Our wider curriculum has provided plenty of opportunities for deep thinking! In Science, we explored the different phases of the Moon and how it orbits the Earth. In History, the children put on their historian hats to evaluate sources about Saint Cuthbert, debating the question: Was he a traditional Anglo-Saxon? Meanwhile, in PSHE, we had some mature and insightful discussions around respect and what it means to build respectful relationships.
Spellings for Next Week
Our spelling focus for next week covers words ending with the suffix ‘-tial’. As a reminder, spelling tests take place on Fridays. Please encourage your child to practise writing out the following words:

Tues - Rev Nick will be in for our RE lesson, students will be in to ask questions about being a Christian while exploring from a Humanist point of view.
Weds - Rev Nick will be leading our Harvest assembly, any donations please bring in before then.
