Hi all,
We're so excited to welcome our students back! We hope you all had a wonderful summer break. The classrooms are all set and ready for a year of exciting learning and fun.
This post includes important information, key dates, and a summary into what we'll be learning this half term, if you'd like to encourage wider learning about these topics.
We understand this is a big transition for our pupils moving into year 1, to help smooth their transition it may be of benefit to share this post and these exciting topics with your child today and tomorrow.
This Half Term's Learning Plan:
Here’s a look at some of the topics and subjects we’ll be exploring:
English: We'll be diving into three classic stories: The Gingerbread Man, The Three Billy Goats Gruff, and We're Going to Find That Monster. We'll use these books to practice writing character descriptions and forming complete sentences with correct punctuation and spacing, including: full stops, finger spaces and capital letters. We will also begin using the word "and" to connect words in a sentence.
Maths: Our focus will be on numbers from 0-20. We will work on counting forwards and backward, counting in twos, and comparing numbers using terms like "greater than" and "less than." We will be looking at physical representations of numbers to 20, ordering these numbers from smallest to greatest and vice versa. Towards the end of the half term we will begin to explore simple, single-digit addition and subtraction.
Science: Our focus for science this half term is materials and their properties. This will include simple naming of different materials that the children experience in their day to day lives. We will start to explore the materials properties and what makes them good for specific purposes ie. wood is strong and stiff which makes it good for tables.
Design & Technology: Students will get to be creative by designing and building their very own "Goldilocks chair" for Little Bear, further into the half term we may ask for recyclable material such as cereal boxes and toilet rolls to be provided.
Geography: We will be looking at maps and using compass points to help us understand our environment and world around us. We will be exploring our local area with a local walk and learning about terminology like human and physical features.
Religious Education: We will be looking at Hinduism this half term, focusing on how the five senses are important in Hindu prayer and practise.
Music: This half term we will be using untuned percussion instruments to explore the dynamics of music.
PE: Your child's PE session will be every Tuesday morning. Therefore please send your child into school on Tuesday wearing their PE kit and remove any earrings before school.
