Year 2 Weekly Update – Poppies & Violets 🌺💜

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you have all had a lovely week! Here is a little update about some of the exciting learning that has been taking place in Year 2 this week.

📚 English

In English, we have started our exciting new text, Akimbo, which is based on the plains of Africa. We have been building up our vocabulary and learning lots about safari life and the African savanna.

The children went on a special “safari” to learn how to stay safe around wild animals and worked together to come up with important safari safety rules. We also went outside for a vocabulary hunt, where the children searched for and collected different names of animals, tools and equipment that might be used when travelling around the African savanna. The children did brilliantly at gathering ambitious vocabulary and practising spelling the words correctly.

➗ Maths

In Maths, we are continuing our learning about fractions and have now moved on to problem solving. The children have been finding a half, a quarter and a third of both shapes and quantities.

We have been learning that to find:

  • a half ➡️ divide by 2

  • a quarter ➡️ divide by 4

  • a third ➡️ divide by 3

The children have been using sharing circles and practical resources to help them share amounts equally into groups. We have been very impressed with their resilience and mathematical thinking!

🚀 DT

In DT, we are building up towards making our exciting moon buggies, which we will be creating on Friday 15th May!

Thank you so much to everyone who has already brought in recycling materials — we really appreciate your support. Please see the previous Wix post for ideas of useful items we would gratefully receive.

Just a reminder that any materials brought in will be shared amongst the whole class rather than kept for individual children, so please only send items that you and your child are happy to contribute to our shared resource collection. There is absolutely no expectation to bring anything in, but we are very grateful for any boxes, packaging and recyclable materials you may be able to donate.

🧬 Science

In Science, we are learning about the life cycles of animals and humans. The children have been exploring the different stages of growth and development, including how animals and humans change over time — for example, from cub to bear or from baby to adult human.

🧥 Labelling Clothing & Belongings

We are still having a number of jumpers and belongings arriving without names on, which makes it very tricky for us to return lost items to their owners.

Please ensure that all belongings are clearly labelled with your child’s name, including:

  • jumpers and cardigans

  • coats

  • water bottles

  • lunch boxes

  • snack pots

  • bags and other belongings

Although the weather is beginning to improve, children still need to bring at least a jumper each day and ideally a waterproof coat as well, as the weather can still change quite quickly.

Please also remember to send your child in with a water bottle every day, as we are getting through disposable plastic cups very quickly on days when children do not have one with them.

💜 Thank You

Finally, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all of the support you continue to give us each and every week. Your support at home makes such a huge difference, and we truly couldn’t do it without you.

Kind regards,

Miss Dee and Mrs. Rees
