Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 10th November

Welcome back! We hit the ground running this week, shaking off any half-term cobwebs with a fantastic mix of physical and academic challenges.

Monday saw us kick off with a brilliant Rugby Taster Session  run by coaches from Southend Rugby Club! The children showed exceptional energy, fantastic listening skills, and, crucially, a great spirit of teamwork. There were some seriously impressive passes and tries! If your child came home buzzing and is keen to get involved, we'll be sharing information soon about how they can join a local team and continue developing those skills.

In Maths we dived straight into the deep end of the number pool, focusing on cube numbers and putting them side-by-side with square and prime numbers. The children are getting very adept at comparing these special types of numbers. We also polished our place value skills by counting forwards and backwards in powers of 10 and 100. It’s all about understanding the building blocks of magnitude!

English was a dramatic week! We started with Performance Poetry, focusing on rhythm, voice, and using actions to enhance the words—a great chance for our class extroverts to shine! We then moved into our new unit on Diary Writing, exploring how to capture thoughts, feelings, and events in a personal, reflective style.

In honour of Remembrance Week, in Reading, we paused our new text to explore the incredibly poignant story, 'Rose Blanche.' This powerful narrative gave us a deeply meaningful context to discuss the themes of war, bravery, and compassion, encouraging thoughtful discussion and reflection.

In Geography we began an important unit on Climate Change, learning exactly what it is, what causes it, and analysing real-world data to understand its impact. We discussed the difference between weather and climate with some genuine 'light bulb' moments in the room!

In Science we've launched into our new topic: Forces! This week was all about getting a hands-on feel for pushes, pulls, and the mystery that is gravity. The students are already demonstrating a real scientific curiosity, questioning why things move (or don't!).

Don't forget, the Christmas Design samples are coming home with your child today! Please take a look at the brilliant artwork they've created for the cards, mugs, tote bags, and other lovely bits. Be sure to fill in the order form ASAP so you don't miss the deadline and get those perfect personalised gifts delivered in time!

Reminders for next week: Mon - PE please ensure your child has their full kit. We have cross-country try-outs—and the field is a bit muddy! Bring a spare pair of shoes they can change into.

Weds - New Intake Open Evening (for new September starters). Ambassadors and School Council need to arrive at 4:45pm.

Fri - Children in Need fundraising day (TBC - more details to follow on this shortly!).

Spellings for next week are words ending in -ance and -ancy:

relevancy, abundancy, vacancy, extravagance, brilliance, abundance, hesitancy, dominancy, elegance, tolerance

We've attached some spelling resources to support learning at home. Plus, if your child enjoys a little screen time with a purpose, there will be a new spelling assignment on Spelling Shed from Friday!

Have a great rest of the week and a truly restful weekend when it arrives!
