Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 11th May 2026

Our Learning This Week

We’ve spent a big chunk of this week tackling our end-of-year assessments for Maths and Reading. We couldn’t be prouder of the children - the progress they’ve made since September is amazing, and their "can-do" attitude during the tests was a joy to see. Well done, everyone!

English: Taking Flight

We’ve officially kicked off a brand-new unit based on the book The Closest Thing to Flying. It’s a wonderful story, and the children are already using it as a springboard to plan their own short stories. We’ve been looking at how to build atmosphere and hook a reader from the very first sentence.

Science: The Secret Life of Plants

In Science, we’ve been getting stuck into the world of plant reproduction. We’ve been learning all about how flowers work, the role of busy pollinators, and the clever ways seeds travel to start new life. It's been great to see the children making links between the classroom and the nature they see outside.

History: Dressing for Power

We’re back with the Tudors, and this week we’ve been looking at the legendary Elizabeth I. We explored how she used her portraits to send secret messages of power and strength to her people. The children loved "decoding" the symbols in her famous paintings to see how she controlled her royal image!

Maths: Putting Skills to the Test

Now that we’ve mastered the basics, it’s time to put them to work! This week, we’ve been focusing on problem-solving, applying our multiplication and division skills to tricky SATS-style questions. The children are becoming real pros at spotting the "hidden" maths in word problems.
