Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 13th October

What a busy and brilliant week it's been! In Maths, we stepped back in time to explore Roman Numerals, not just learning to read them but understanding the pattern and system behind I,V,X,L,C,D, and M. We also honed our number sense by learning to find and describe multiples, which is a foundational skill for so much of our future work. English saw us put our creative hats on for an unseen writing task: crafting our very own mystery story! The class showed off their incredible imagination and storytelling skills. On the grammar side, we tackled two powerful punctuation marks: the colon to introduce a list and the more sophisticated semicolon to separate complex list items, helping us write clearer and more detailed sentences. For Reading, we dived headfirst into the epic world of 'Beowulf' and Grendel. The children were gripped by the tale of the great hero and the monstrous creature, allowing us to explore themes of good versus evil and bravery.

In History we reached a fascinating stage as we spent the lesson evaluating the long-term impact of the Vikings on Britain. We debated and discussed how their settlements, laws, and culture shaped Britain we know today—a great exercise in historical analysis! Finally, in Science, we became budding geologists! We explored the incredible world of impact craters, learning how they form and what they tell us about planetary history. The class did a fantastic job of a hands-on investigation, learning to gather and record data using tables and graphs—real scientific work!

Reminder for tomorrow!

Don't forget that tomorrow is our Wild West themed day! Please ensure your child comes prepared with:

  • Their PE kit to change into after the main activity.

  • An extra pair of socks and shoes (their current pair will get wet).

  • A towel (the children will be wet!).

We can't wait for a day full of fun!

Don't forget an oversized shirt/top to go over your child's uniform for Art on Friday, we will be using acrylic paint and it will not come out of school uniform!
