Our Learning This Week
What a busy, brilliant, and productive week we have had! From tuning up our performing skills to diving into powerful new topics in English and Maths, the children have brought a fantastic energy to everything they've tackled. Here is a look at what we've been up to and what you need to know for the action-packed week ahead.
Music & Drama: Countdown to the Performance!
The excitement is building as we have spent a lot of time this week practising for our big performance on Thursday evening! The children have been working incredibly hard, and we are so looking forward to seeing you all there. We are keeping a close eye on the British weather, and the weather is looking likely for us to have to move indoors. Mr Stainsbury has asked us to send out a google form asking if you would prefer us to change the date for next Thursday 18th June instead. The children have been practising outside in the ampitheatre and we believe this atmosphere is best suited for the performance. If the performance goes ahead tomorrow and we are in the hall, we will unfortunately need to restrict numbers to 2 adults per family due to hall capacity. Here is the link for the google form to share your preference, please share this via your social network groups for parents of Year 5. We need as many replies as possible to make a fair decision.
Important request: If your child is not intending to be here for the evening performance, please let us know as soon as possible so we can allocate their speaking part to someone else.
English: Journeying with the Windrush Child
This week marked the beginning of our brand-new biography unit in English. We are basing our writing around the powerful text The Windrush Child. The children have already shown great empathy and historical curiosity as we began exploring the real-life experiences and journeys of the Windrush generation.
Maths: Spotting the Trends
In Maths, we jumped into our statistics unit. The children have been putting their analytical skills to the test by learning how to interpret complex timetables and accurately read line graphs. These are fantastic, real-world skills that they are picking up incredibly quickly!
Spellings for Next Week
We are back to our normal routine with spellings, which will be tested next Friday 19th June. This week's focus is on tricky homophones and near-homophones (words that sound similar but are spelled differently and mean different things):
affect / effect
precede / proceed
draught / draft
desert / dessert
who's / whose
Reminders for Next Week
We have a very busy schedule when we return on Monday. Please keep these key dates in mind:
All Week: It is Refugee Week, and we will be exploring this important theme across our learning.
Wednesday 17th June: PE Day. Please ensure children come to school wearing their correct PE kits.
Thursday 18th June: Our exciting Wild West Day! (Please see the attached letter for full details). The Scholastic Book Fair will also be open after school for you to browse.
Friday 19th June: A few big updates for Friday:
Class Photos: All children must arrive in full school uniform, including their tie. Please note that summer uniform is not permitted for photos.
Staffing: Mrs Fox will be teaching the Willows class for the day.
Events: It is a non-uniform day, and our Father's Day Gift Shop will be open for the children to visit.
