Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 18th May 2026

Our Learning This Week

It has been another action-packed week of discovery and hard work! From decoding the social structures of the past to mastering the intricacies of number theory, the children have shown fantastic engagement and curiosity.

English: Connecting Generations

We have officially moved into the Hot Task phase of our writing unit! Inspired by The Closest Thing to Flying, the children are busy planning and drafting short stories that bridge two different time periods. It has been wonderful to see their creativity shine as they weave together narratives that span the decades, focusing on those emotional threads that connect us all.

Maths: Powering Through Numbers

This week was all about precision and problem-solving. We revisited the foundations of square, cube, and prime numbers, ensuring everyone feels confident identifying them at a glance. We then put that knowledge to the test with complex word problems, challenging the children to decide which mathematical tool is best for the job.

Science: The Cycle of Life

Our exploration of the natural world continued as we delved deeper into plant reproduction. We’ve been investigating the journey from pollination to fertilisation, discovering the fascinating ways plants ensure their species continues. The children are becoming real experts at identifying the different parts of a flower and their specific functions!

History: The Tudor Social Ladder

In History, we stepped back in time to explore Tudor Society. We looked at the rigid hierarchy of the 16th century - from the Monarch at the very top down to the labourers and the "sturdy beggars." The children enjoyed discussing how different life would have been depending on where you sat on that social ladder!

PSHE: Growing Up and Staying Safe

In our PSHE sessions, we’ve had some very important and mature discussions regarding personal hygiene and understanding the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touch. These lessons are vital for helping the children navigate the world safely and confidently as they grow.
