Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 2nd February

While we are still immersed in the wondrous world of Peter Bunzl’s Cogheart, our focus has shifted gears. The children have moved on from descriptive writing to exploring explanation texts. It has been fascinating to see them break down the "how" and "why" behind the intricate mechanical inventions in the story. We are working on using causal conjunctions and technical language to explain exactly how a mechanimal might function!

In Maths, we have put our shape classification skills to good use as we transition into our new unit on perimeter. The children have been busy calculating the total distance around various 2D shapes. Whether it’s measuring regular polygons or finding the missing lengths of more complex figures, their accuracy and persistence have been wonderful to witness.

In Science, we are sadly reaching the end of our scientist study on Jane Goodall. The children have been deeply moved by her dedication to primatology and her work with chimpanzees in Gombe. We’ve had some thoughtful discussions about conservation and what it means to be a modern-day scientist.

Meanwhile, in History, we have taken a dramatic turn as we explore the Spanish invasion of the Maya civilisation. We have been looking at the impact of the conquistadors and the lasting legacy of the Maya people. The children have shown great empathy and critical thinking when discussing these significant historical events.

This Friday, we are excited to begin our new collage project! We will be experimenting with textures and layers to create some truly unique pieces.

  • Can you help? If you have any old magazines, leaflets, or colourful brochures that you are planning to recycle, please send them in with your child! We would love to give them a second life in our artwork.
