Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 4th May 2026

Our Learning This Week

English: Voices of Empowerment

We have officially wrapped up our "hot tasks" on the Suffragettes, and the quality of the non-chronological reports was truly impressive! To keep that spirit of empowerment alive, we are spending the rest of the week diving into the soul-stirring poetry of Maya Angelou. The children are analysing her powerful use of imagery and rhythm to understand how words can be used as a tool for resilience and change.

Maths: Arithmetic Mastery

It has been a week of sharpening our calculation skills! We have been revisiting core multiplication and division strategies to ensure our fluency is top-notch. Our focus has been on:

  • Long Multiplication: Perfecting the method for multiplying multi-digit numbers by a 2-digit number.

  • Short Division: Confidently dividing larger values by 1-digit numbers and interpreting remainders.

History: Tudor Turmoil

In History, we stepped back into the 16th century to explore a time of great religious and political upheaval. We’ve been investigating Henry VIII’s break from the Roman Catholic Church and the birth of the Church of England.

To see how these massive changes affected ordinary people, we studied the Pilgrimage of Grace. The children enjoyed debating the motives of the protesters and learning why this was one of the most significant challenges to Henry’s golden reign.
