Year 5 Weekly Blog wb. 5th January

It has been a busy and productive week as we wrap up our final assessments and enjoy the festive spirit. Here is a summary of what the children have been up to:

Arithmetic Progress We are incredibly proud of the progress the children have made in their Arithmetic Tests. Their scores have shown a significant improvement, reflecting the hard work they have put into their mental and formal methods this term. These papers will be sent home this week so you can celebrate their successes and see their specific 'next steps' for the new year.

Reading & Comprehension This week, the children tackled the first part of a Reading SATS paper. We were highly impressed with how they applied the retrieval and inference skills we have practised in our reading lessons to a formal test environment. They showed great stamina and focus!

To conclude our outdoor PE unit, the children participated in a high-energy Tag Rugby Tournament. It was wonderful to see their teamwork and strategic thinking in action. Meanwhile, in the hall, we held a Fitness Session to get everyone moving and active—perfect preparation for all those upcoming Christmas treats!

Lights, Camera, Action! The corridors have been full of excitement as Mr. Stainsbury has been making his way around the school with his camera! He has been filming the children for our yearly Christmas video, and we can’t wait for you to see the final result.

Christmas Dinner Day - The atmosphere in the hall today is wonderful as the children sit down to enjoy their Christmas Dinner. There is plenty of festive music, crackers, and holiday cheer as we celebrate together as a school family.

Important Dates & Reminders for the New Year

As we look ahead to our return in January, please take note of the following schedule changes:

  • Monday 5th Jan: INSET Day (School closed to children).

  • Tuesday 6th Jan: First day back for pupils. A big day for the team as Miss Jackson is finally moving into her new home after a long wait since May!

    • Hazel Class: Please remember your PE kits. Mrs. Oxby will cover the morning session, and the children will work with the coaches in the afternoon.

  • Thursday 8th Jan: * Willow Class: Please remember your PE kits. The children will be working with the coaches for most of the morning.

The first spelling test of the new year will be on Friday 9th January. The focus will be on words ending in ‘-able’ where the ‘e’ from the base word remains:

changeable, noticeable, microwaveable, replaceable, manageable, rechargeable, irreplaceable, knowledgeable, agreeable, salvageable

We wish you all a wonderful final few days of term and a very restful break!
