Hello Year 5 Parents,
It's been a busy and productive week in Year 5! Here's a quick summary of what we've been up to:
This week, we focused on the vital topic of road safety. Lesley joined Willows class on Tuesday (and it's Hazel class's turn tomorrow!). With more of our children walking home independently now they're in Year 5, we stressed the importance of being safe on the roads. We covered key points like looking both ways, avoiding distractions, and understanding crossing procedures.
In Maths, the children have been flexing their mental and written calculation muscles by exploring how to multiply a 3-digit number by a 2-digit number. We looked at two important strategies:
The Grid Method (for clear breakdown of place value).
The Formal Method (the standard written method).
Both methods help ensure accuracy when dealing with larger numbers.
In English, we took a big step forward in our newspaper report writing! The children conducted lively interviews with 'Alva and Magnus' (our fictitious news subjects). A key focus this week was understanding the difference between direct speech (what someone said, using quotation marks) and reported speech (paraphrasing what someone said). This is crucial for writing engaging and accurate news reports.
Just a reminder that tomorrow is our Christmas Gift Shop event! Please ensure your child brings their spending money securely in a named bag. We can't wait for them to choose some lovely gifts.
Reminders for next week:
Mon - PE, watching Year 1 Christmas concert, football match (invite only)
Tues - Football match (invite only)
Weds - Watching EYFS Christmas play
Thurs - Dance festival rehearsals (2:15-3:10pm)
Fri - Rocksteady concert at 9:15am (parents invited if children play)
The spellings for next week are challenge words (Y5/6 CEW):
sincerely, secretary, dictionary, suggest, marvellous, controversy, opportunity, twelfth, available, accommodate
After next week there will be no spellings before Christmas!
We have set English homework on google classroom based on the present perfect tense, well done to those who have had a go at the maths last week! Please join the classroom with your child's school email address and same password they would use in school.
