Design & Technology
Subject Intent Statement:
"To inspire inquisitiveness about the designed world in order to design, make and evaluate purposeful products."
- Miss Dee, Subject Lead
From an early age, we ensure our children have a rich Design and Technology curriculum.
In this lesson, the children were challenged to research the ingredients for a gingerbread person using their computing skills and then with a set class design criteria design and make their own. They carefully measured the ingredients using their maths skills and then were extremely precise over their decoration (ensuring that they matched their designs well).
In Year 5, we created ambitious double page spreads to gather and communicate our ideas for designing a strong and stable structure. We challenged ourselves to recall and apply our learning from other subjects such as history and geography to make the Maya temples as true to life as possible whilst fitting the design criteria of being able to hold a specific weight and withstand a ‘shake test’.

The children's work below is an excellent example of ambitious DT learning, where the pupil has come up with original and inventive ways to show their designs using a range of cross-sectional diagrams as well as new and novel ways to manufacture realistic looking decorations - considering how best to make and join them.
